Chapter Thirteen

They reached the vale the following morning. Zilri asked several times if they wanted to stop to eat or rest on the ground, but they kept denying it. Julian slept on the back of the dragon, finding comfort in her warm scales as the howling, cold wind threatened to disturb his peace. His wives were able to sleep as well and were in a similar humor, wanting to return to the capital with something to show as quickly as possible.

Zilri didn’t seem bothered or tired from flying for almost a whole day. When they arrived at the vale and Julian saw the semi-arid landscape being replaced by a green one full of rivers and wildlife, his eyes glimmered, and a smile barged onto his face.

He saw a couple of elephants down below, other creatures with horns above their nostrils, and many more strange animals. None were the humanoids with lion heads, but Julian didn’t doubt there was one of them waiting down below. Zilri slowed her flight for him and his wives to contemplate the view and hummed with pleasure with any reaction one of them expressed about how lovely it was to fly on her back. She didn’t seem like a murderous beast in Julian’s mind as they descended and soared over the animals who kept minding their own business as if they weren’t there.

Are we close? Julian asked in his mind, testing if it would work. Zilri didn’t seem to hear him, and he tried again, putting intent into the words reaching out to her. This time, he noticed she glanced back at him as if his established connection scratched something inside her head.

You learned how to use telepathic communication. That’s impressive.

Thank you. So, are we close? Julian asked, having difficulty putting emotion or tone into his internal voice.

Behind the mountain at the edge of the valley, she said, and Julian looked toward where her eyes were aiming. The mountain was as high as the flying pearl, so high that its peak was covered in snow, creating a beautiful contrast with the vale below.

At the top?

Above the top, she completed, and Julian leaned against her scales as if wanting to absorb as much heat as possible before they had to go so high into the sky. She seemed to like it, but didn’t say a word.

When Julian looked over his shoulder, he realized all his wives were doing the same. Ranabi, on the other hand, kept looking at the ground below, undeterred by the cold wind or the immense speed Zilri traveled.

Anything we should be prepared to face?

The mountain is full of apes. The few times I landed there, they were aggressive.

We don’t plan to land there.

Exactly, she said, and Julian felt the wind becoming more violent as she increased her speed. The previous slow and contemplative flight had become an immense blur of speed and action. Julian couldn’t hear anything. It was tough to keep his eyes open, but at least he was sure they were close to their destination, and that was enough to make him endure.
